No doubt, we all cringe when we need to deal with an underperformer in the workplace. However, it’s important to note that managing an underperformer is common practice which most, if not all employers have to deal with at some stage. If not handled properly, it can lead to a disaster which can tarnish the reputation, viability and profitability of the employer’s business. Therefore, it is critical for employers to have proper disciplinary action policies/procedures in place to avoid any…

The NRL’s Manly Sea Eagles have faced an uncomfortable situation regarding a key employee in recent times. Just as the club’s pre-season was about to start, it had two head coaches ready, willing and able to show up for training. Trent Barrett had tendered his resignation from the position in June 2018 and was serving out his twelve-month notice period. In the meantime, the club had also hired Des Hasler to replace Barrett as the head coach.
Despite hiring a new coach, the club…

The general protections provisions under the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) (FW Act) make it unlawful for an employer to take adverse action against a person for a prohibited reason. Often, however, employees include claims of bullying and harassment that have the effect of “muddying the waters” about the real reason that adverse action was taken.
In Turley v James Frizelles Automotive Group [ 2018] FCCA 2989, an employee claimed that his employer took…

Findings of accessorial liability for contraventions of the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) (FW Act) are now frequent occurrences. Most commonly, the individuals found to have been involved in contraventions of the FW Act are directors of companies, and those findings of personal liability result from prosecutions brought by the Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO).
However, employers and their managers should be aware that it is not only the FWO that is able…

Bullying is the scourge of many workplaces. There are few things which destroy office morale, tear apart team cohesion or cause good staff to leave as quickly as victimisation and harassment in the workplace. Interestingly, research has identified 22 different types of bullying conduct which might be encountered in the average workplace.
We outline these different types of bullying and provide tips…

Data security is increasingly becoming an issue of concern, particularly with more business activity being facilitated by the internet, for instance, transactions, data storage and business applications. And with businesses utilising cloud computing in growing numbers, naturally security around how data is stored in the cloud is an issue.
Generally security measures offered by cloud providers are good and many have invested heavily in this area. As security measures for cloud…

My last post covered how business leaders are looking to build agility and foster innovation into their organisations by using Project teams. Now I want to look at the second approach that came out from my research: breaking down roles into activities and subsequently optimising tasks.
According to a report by…

We’re big believers in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and its benefits for the corporate world. But there’s another personality system we like to use, the Enneagram.
We’ve been using it for over 20 years now, but for whatever reason, it doesn't have the widespread interest in corporate Australia that it probably should…

There’s one topic in the recruitment industry that continues to divide people: the fees charged by recruiters, especially those in the executive search space, for their services.
I’m talking predominantly about the larger global blue chip search brands, but also many of the other executive search companies that present themselves in Australia.
Despite it being a hot topic for years now, little has changed, but it definitely needs…

Keeping the employees safe while they work is one of the most basic and most important duties of any employer. It is their legal and moral obligation to make sure that no one can get hurt while working for them. However, it can be a bit complicated, especially if the job is such that provides many opportunities for physical harm. Sometimes a safety hazard isn’t perceived as such, and sometimes the employees aren’t careful enough and get hurt…

After an incident has occurred, you should collect all the facts and…

It's the end of a long year. Employers and staff alike have worked hard and are looking forward to the opportunity to catch up, celebrate, network and relax.
The work Christmas party is often anticipated as an ideal way to farewell the working year, reward staff, and anticipate the year ahead. However, employers must understand that a successful - and incident-free - Christmas party is dependent upon good planning and…

I think back to when I was nearing the end of high school, and I didn't really have a clue what I wanted to do career-wise. I don’t think I was alone in that position. I started a course at Uni and then switched to another, I graduated, then all of a sudden was in the market for employment. I think quite a few graduates then and now, are left looking at a closed door with a sign saying “More experience needed!” It can become a vicious cycle.
Part of my mission in joining…
