Enough with the tricks.......

I've been running workshops on soft skills and influencing principles for more than a decade and I have a confession to make. One of the things that really peeves me about certain parts of the professional and personal development industry is the sheer volume of articles or programs positioned around teaching someone the "tricks" to do "X" to another human being. The "X" in these instances could be influencing others, making people like you or getting people to do what you want, to name just…

Are you looking to add or extract value?

I went to my first speed networking event in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago and it was a very interesting experience. The event was positioned on Meet Up for Solo Entrepreneurs and I was invited by my friend Karen Cohen who has just started up her business Kaycee HR Consulting. Given that I am exploring the prospect of using Meet Up to advertise my …

Do you know what NLP is?

Do you know what NLP is? If not, don't worry. Not too many people know what NLP / Neuro Linguistic Programing actually is. Some people think it is about persuasion and influence, others think it is about communication while others simply have no clue what it is.

So what is it?

In simple terms, it is the study of excellence.

Are you unconsciously entrenching resistance to change in your team?

One of the issues that is repeatedly raised with me by leaders is how to "deal" with change resistant team members.

Some of the first questions I ask them are "How are you framing or positioning the initiatives to your team members?" and "What aspects of the initiatives are they perceived to be resisting?"

I often find based on the responses I…

As I considered the carrot Tony had dangled in front of his followers, I decided to read the 240+ responses that the click-bait question had elicited.

As I scrolled through the fervent hot tub motivated…

Are you making these 3 mistakes when delivering feedback?

Apart from public speaking, nothing else seems to strike more fear into the hearts of people in the workplace than having to deliver constructive feedback to a direct report, peer or manager.

There are plenty of feedback models out there and the purpose of this post is not to complicate matters by teaching you another one. My intention is to bring to your attention some of the mistakes people make when delivering their feedback.

So to begin…

There's no such thing as a "silver bullet" technique

Participants on my workshops regularly ask me for some "silver bullet" technique or model that will some how transform a distressed relationship into a healthy one. Usually the request is phrased at the beginning of a workshop along the lines of "What can I say or do to make this person do X instead of Y?"

Here are some of the responses I have given over the years depending on the participant’s intention for wanting this outcome.

There is no magic…

Ten Simple Ways To Destroy A Team

Most of the articles or books I read on topics such as leadership and team work focus on what you need to do to improve performance. I thought it might be a little bit of fun to turn some of that advice on its head and reflect on ten simple ways to destroy a team.

You never know, maybe someone reading this will share the post with their team and use humour as a way to shine a light on some of the team’s less than desirable patterns of…
