5 Ways to Improve Your Construction Company’s Safety Culture

Safety is most certainly one of the major concerns of every construction company. The job, obviously, comes with a wide variety of risks. This is why it is essential for your business to have a strong safety culture. Engagement with each and every employee is crucial because they all need to be trained and fully aware of all the possible risks, as well as the ways to make sure that everyone on the worksite is protected. 

Of course, the person that needs to make all this happen is you. You have to be the main enforcer of the safety culture and provide all of your employees with everything they need in order for them to be able to fully comprehend and uphold it. It is not enough just to follow government regulations. Your company has to base its operations on safety principles and practices.

If you already have a safety culture, but it doesn’t seem to be working out the way you’ve planned, here are 5 ways that you can improve it.

Make safety the number one priority

If you really want to boost your safety culture, you simply have to make the whole concept of safety the core of the job itself. Begin with your upper management. Everyone at the top has to make it their obligation, be an example to others by taking part in safety meetings and help out during training. 

One of the best solutions is to assemble a safety committee. It should consist of people from all levels that make up your company. Their job would be to uphold the safety program, review it, and keep it up to date. Furthermore, they should generate safety plans that are going to be included in every future project. This is done by determining all the possible safety issues and risks.

Put together an accident response team

There should also be an accident response team which gets assigned to every worksite. People on the team need to have some first aid training and know well whom to reach out to if something happens to anyone out there.

It is very important to note that getting your employees involved in such a way is bound to make them truly invested in forming and upholding your company’s safety culture. Because, after all, every culture depends on and is maintained by people. 

Inspect sites on a daily basis and conduct safety meetings

It is very important to inspect the worksite on a daily basis. This means before your employees get down to work and after they finish.  The reasoning behind this is simple - any concerns for safety, such as equipment that might have been damaged during the process, or tools that might have been left at an inappropriate place and could pose a threat, need to be identified and pointed out beforehand. It is, of course, also essential that you supply the best solutions for all the existing equipment in terms of necessary parts and accessories (such as, for example, engines, tires, tubes, panels, crane and forklift attachments, and so on). 

Before your staff gets down to work, you should hold a safety meeting and go over all the tasks that are supposed to be done that day, as well as all the related safety procedures. Focus on any issues or worries that you might have so that everyone knows what they should pay attention to.

Train your staff every step of the way

As you are probably already aware, talking a lot about safety isn’t going to do much on its own. You have to constantly train your staff members. Everyone should go through regular safety training and be responsible for maintaining and emphasizing the best possible safety practices. Basically, there is no use in training if you do it only once. It has to be a process that will make your workforce evolve, as they internalize safety practices and improve them all the time.

When you hire new staff members, provide them with training as a part of their onboarding process. This way you will put them in the right mindset from the start.

Make sure that everyone is held accountable

It is extremely important that your workforce understands that everyone who enters a worksite instantly becomes responsible for the safety of each and every person out there. They should all be aware that they have a big responsibility, and that they must avoid any unsafe practices because they will put both themselves and others in danger. 

This is why safety rules need to be very strict and clear. Every member of your workforce has to be aware that their actions have consequences. They should be encouraged to say anything that is on their mind and report any situation that they believe to be unsafe. Basically, each and every employee should be empowered in terms of being able to stop work if they believe there is an issue, address it to anyone at a higher position, and then do their best to correct the situation in order to make it safe again.
