...WHAT'S THE WEATHER GOING TO BE LIKE TODAY?

How often have you thought or asked this question at the start of the day?

Do you always get it right? No?

Any big disasters follow? Rarely?

There we go! We all face potential change and uncertainty every day, and we capably deal with it.

THEN YOU HEAR IN BUSINESS...

...EVERYONE'S TIRED OF SO MUCH CHANGE - THERE'S CHANGE FATIGUE

An executive recounted this to me and commented:

"Whenever I get told this, I can't help but think the real issue is leadership."

In other words, if people are feeling tired of so much change in an organisation, what are their leaders doing about it?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Organisations are constantly changing ... they have to in order to survive and grow.

If you set a 12 month business plan and slavishly follow it - you will miss, because your world will change over a year.

If you remain fixed on your priorities, and refuse to change them no matter what, you are in danger because you will lose the advantage of being agile.

If people want their day-to-day work to remain unchanged, it may satisfy for a while - but energy will gradually be lost.

And just as importantly, when something really big happens, which demands a major shift in the organisation, it will be a lot harder to rally.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So what to do …?

The Priority Shuffle

As a leader:

1. Know your organisation and leaders' short and long term priorities

2. Know your subsequent key priorities

3. Guide your people to stay aligned to your priorities

4. Stay aligned to any changes to your organisation and leaders' short and long term priorities

The Benefits!

  • The business and its leadership will be better served by your efforts
  • You will be clearer on your value and where you can best contribute
  • Your people will always be engaged as they know their efforts are directly contributing to the success of the business
  • You will have a closer connection with what your people are actually doing with their work
  • You will be in a strong position to help guide the business and its leadership when you first observe changes not noticed by others

.... and people will not be "CHANGE FATIGUED" because they will always be properly focusing their efforts.

Instead, they will be energised, engaged and feel strong ownership around LEADING the business.

AN EXTRA QUICK TIP ON PRIORITISING:

Every day, when you first sit at your desk facing a mountain of work …

1. What are my priorities today? (List 2-4) (If you're not sure, ask a colleague or your boss for help)

2. Write them down and put this list somewhere visible on your desk

...  even if your day gets out of control and you don't get a chance to do even ONE of your priorities …

You know you have a head start on what you need to focus on tomorrow!
