This article from Human Capital Online calls into question the validity of workshops as the most suitable way to develop leaders, suggesting instead that the real learning happens as a result of coaching and in particular during group coaching.

It backs up the anecdotal evidence I’ve seen in the last 12 months. People who are responsible for developing leaders are realising that trying to cram all that knowledge into the heads of young leaders in a few days doesn’t work. To apply my gardening metaphor to the situation, it’s like trying to give a plant a years worth of water and wondering why it runs off or causes it to rot.

So why do we persist with the old workshop model? I think is a number of factors including:

  • It is familiar
  • Fear of trying something new
  • Less effort to convince decision makers
  • Pressure from program providers to continue
  • Time and money invested in programs

I don’t believe any of these are good enough reasons to ignore coaching. That’s why I’ve taken the plunge and recently changed my business model to focus exclusively on coaching based programs. They are a far more time effective and customised way to help people develop the skills they need. Already I am getting great feedback from my clients and seeing people grow before my eyes.
