Improving Employee Recognition: 5 Thoughtful and Sincere Ideas

Most people are not willing to go the extra mile if they don’t feel appreciated. Would you want to work for a boss who never acknowledged your effort or said “thank you” if you worked late for free? No, of course, you wouldn’t.

Employees are your biggest asset. Sometimes referred to as human capital, employees can make or break a business. Good employees are worth their weight in gold. They go the extra mile, are loyal, and inspire others. Bad employees never do more than the bare minimum and jump ship the moment a better offer comes along, which is not helpful if the business invested a lot of money in creating a great training program for them.

Unfortunately, a 2017 survey found that only 25% of employees felt appreciated and valued at work. To make matters worse, this was a 16% drop on the previous year. It is a worrying trend.

The good news is that showing some appreciation isn’t that difficult. There are many ways to show some love, which in turn helps to create a healthier workplace culture. Read on for five thoughtful ways to show some appreciation of your hard-working employees.

Employee Wellness Programs

Healthy employees are happy employees. They are also less likely to take sick days, so it’s a win-win for everyone when you implement an employee wellness program. You don’t need to go to the level of providing sleep pods, games rooms, or on-site gyms. That type of expenditure is reserved for larger organizations. But anything you can do to give your employees a health boost is for the greater good.

Let them know how much you appreciate their hard work by letting them choose from a selection of health and wellness rewards. These could be simple things like an extra paid ‘wellness day’ or an opportunity to take part in a fun team building exercise. Negotiate with local gyms and offer your employees reduced subscription fees or hand out fitness-related performance rewards such as a Fitbit.

Healthy employees boost the bottom line. What’s not to like about that?

Recognition Lapel Pins

Employee recognition pins are an affordable yet effective way to recognize achievements. Have some recognition lapel pins made with motivational messages such as ‘Employee of the Month’ or ‘Top Salesperson’. Giving an employee a recognition pin helps honor their achievements in a public way. They can wear their lapel pin with pride and keep it at the end of the designated period.

You can buy lapel pins relatively cheaply from online suppliers, so invest in a box and see how much your employees enjoy wearing their recognition pins.

Organize a Staff Party

Depending on the type of industry you work in, there could be times when motivation is flagging, and staff morale is slow. Once you reach the end of this difficult time, why not hold an all-expenses-paid staff party as a reward for their hard work?

Everyone needs to let off steam once in a while and a staff party is an excellent way to do this. You don’t need to book a function room at a swanky hotel; supplying some beer and pizza at the end of the week will achieve the same result. Or, take your employees out for a nice lunch and pick up the tab. It’s the thought that counts.

Wall of Fame

It may sound cheesy, but a classic wall of fame is an easy way to give a shout-out to the more deserving employees. How you choose employees will depend on your business, but common ways include positive customer feedback that named the employee, exceeding sales targets and outstanding performance on specific projects. You could also run a peer-nominated wall of fame.

Desk Drops

Be creative and reward outstanding employees with little things you know they will appreciate. Gift cards, cakes, a bottle of something nice, or a voucher they can spend on a family day out. Finding a gift on their desk when they arrive at the office is bound to perk up any employee and make them feel super appreciated.

It is important to tailor whatever scheme you devise to suit your workplace. Every business is different and what works for one business might not suit another.
