But how does this affect HR?
With the workforce becoming adept at using new media to promote themselves, share news and engage with brands and individuals, there is space for organisations to do the same internally and there are many benefits from a digital, social approach to HR.

Social HR is the next natural step in the world of new media, yet most businesses are behind the curve when it comes to using social technology to their advantage, both internally and externally to recruit, develop and engage employees.

How can new media benefit HR?
New media for marketing purposes is common place and this year will be the year of social HR as this technology will be used for recruitment, internal communications and employee engagement.

Jeanne Meister, a regular contributor to Forbes.com, recently posted an article entitled “2013: The Year of Social HR”, in which she highlights how gamification will become standard practice:

“In 2013, gamification will continue making huge inroads in many business processes.
With more research, studies, and real-world examples proving the power of incorporating game mechanics into non-game activities like marketing, call centre operations and learning and development, a greater number of enterprise processes will start to become “gamified.”
Deloitte is one company already using gamification, integrating levels, “badges” and top-scoring leader boards into its “Deloitte Leadership Academy,” which has trained over 20,000 executive users since its inception in 2008. As a result of this effort, Deloitte and its clients can boast rewards like engaged employees who are committed to improving at work… The technology research firm Gartner, Inc. predicts that 70 per cent of Global 2000 businesses will be managing at least one “gamified” application or system by 2014.”
