Some tips to avoid a HR hangover on 1 July!

As this financial year sprints to the end, a lot of employees will be looking forward to the much awaited ‘end of financial year’ party. While this is a great way for employees to take a breath after the year that was, it can become a testing time for HR staff when last drinks are called.

To help minimise or avoid poor behaviour, here are some tips:

  • Remind employees about what constitutes unacceptable behaviour and the consequences for such behaviour.
  • Encourage employees to look after one another (the buddy-buddy system).
  • Consider the venue and reaffirm the organisation’s commitment to the responsible consumption of alcohol to the bar staff.
  • Limit the type of alcohol and how long it will be available.
  • Provide food throughout the party, not just at the beginning.
  • Provide a means of getting to the venue and home at the end of the night.

Finally, if there is an incident, deal with it as soon as possible.

Everyone enjoys a party and the tips above are not designed to curb the fun. Rather, they are meant to provide an environment where everyone can enjoy themselves safely, and with regard for others. At the end of the day, it isn’t meant to be a frat party.

These tips have been provided as guidance only and should not be taken as legal advice.
