Are you developing your talent or just training your staff?

I love the excellent research recently undertaken by Psylutions and Curve Group, published as a white paper Best Practice in practice talent management, which HR Daily wrote about recently.   On page 9 of the white paper there is a list of recommendations for effective talent management. Half way down the list…See More

Key Selection Criteria: When less is more

Malcom Gladwell's book, Blink: The power of thinking without thinking (Penguin, 2005), has a number of fantastic insights highly relevant for recruiters, specifically when Gladwell explores the ‘less is more' syndrome.Gladwell asserts that in certain circumstances, receiving more information about an issue can cause you to become more inaccurate or ineffective in your response to, or conclusions about, that issue with a corresponding increase in your confidence that your conclusions are…See More

How not to use LinkedIn: Lessons for recruiters (and other self-promoters)

How can professional people, people who should know better, do such dumb things in the course of doing their job?No, I'm not talking about Former CIA director David Petraeus and his affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell, I'm talking about the way some people use LinkedIn.I currently have over 2,500 first level LinkedIn connections as well as being a member of about 40 LinkedIn groups. As a result I receive plenty of LinkedIn generated emails each day. Minor irritations are people I don't…See More

Email marketing: Are you annoying people and trashing your brand?

One of the trivial, petty annoyances that occur every week is having unsolicited emails arrive in my inbox. Mostly these messages are of the global junk spam variety. A typical random selection from this week's junk folder being:Dear Selected Winner,We are pleased to inform you of the EMAIL REWARD PROGRAM for Internet users.Your email address was the star pick from the automated ballot system and by virtue of this pick, you are entitled to receive the grand reward of Two Million, Five Hundred…See More

Career development: We've come a long way

When I was a student, Career Development was not a topic I ever heard discussed. My school had a careers advisor and that person would, so it seemed to me, review a student's subject results and then recommend a likely job or profession. In 1980's Hobart, my recollection of the options were something like, depending upon your subjects and marks, one of; Lawyer, Accountant, Scientist, Teacher, Nurse, Tradie, Architect, Engineer, Secretary or Public Servant'. The creative types were told to apply…See More
