Workplace Mediation – the Benefit of Participation

At times we can feel overwhelmed by the frustration or hurt we believe has been caused by a colleague who has shown a lack of consideration, displayed inappropriate behaviours, used offensive language or is just not ‘playing fair’ as part of a team. Repeated small incidents plant the seed for workplace conflict. With no resolution strategy, the gap between you and your colleague widens and your emotions more strongly influence your perspective on the situation.

What is the best course of action?

  • Is it better to take the risk and mediate with this colleague to resolve the conflict?
  • Is it better to face the perceived discomfort of mediation than to look back and find you’ve continually speculated on the “what ifs?”
  • Is it better to be a proactive participant in a solution than be a spectator to a situation that had the potential to improve, but now remains full of unexplored and undelivered outcomes?

Why participate in mediation? 

Judging if your colleague is worthy of your time, attention and energy in mediation should not be the focus on which you base your decision. Rather, the focus should be on yourself with the question to answer: do you wish to continue to harbour hurt, resentment and excuses? Inaction reduces you to a position in which you lose your voice and an opportunity to have input into the future of your own workplace relationships. Take that step forward to be an active participant in mediation and be a contributor to the resolution of conflict that is affecting you in the workplace. Instead of judging your colleague’s worthiness to be allowed to “take up your time and energy in mediation”, think about the opposite perspective: are you worthy of having more peace and less distraction at work?
